Most of what passes for funny in gaming is throw-away, paint-by-numbers irreverence, pop-culture references and wacky antics for people who think The Big Bang Theory is the spirit of Richard Pryor reincarnated as a sitcom.īirdGut isn’t hilarious - it won’t change your life or anything, but the writing of the game’s creator, Micah Boursier, has an understated charm that complements the game’s meta-joke, which is the fact that it exists at all. In an industry dominated by self-described nerds, a truly funny game comes out maybe once every three years. And that is what perfection is.īirdGut’s controls are tight, the drawings derpy and the physics conducive to a sense of fairness, but it’s also a funny game, a feat even rarer than perfection. One cannot fairly criticize Taco Bell for the poor quality of its food, its lack of authenticity or even the bodily harm one may incur by fraternizing with its customers, because those are each integral components of Taco Bell-ness, and if you remove or change any of those things what you are left with is something less than what we know as Taco Bell today. Perfection is bounded by the endeavor of the artist. One is a fake Mexican restaurant in which you can order an obscene amount of tortillas, meat, beans, cheese and lettuce in various and somewhat arbitrary configurations for $12, and the other is the pinnacle of platforming through the lens of a dim-witted bee attempting to escape the stomach of a bird. It doesn’t mean there aren’t better offerings out there, but rather that it’s a fully actualized version of what it espouses to be. It also enjoys the rare distinction of being a perfect game.īirdGut is a perfect game in the same way that Taco Bell is a perfect restaurant. BirdGut is a mostly-black-and-white, shittily-hand-drawn 2D platformer published in 2019 that takes about two hours to complete.
